Golf Notes 12 August 2014

As was expected Fiona and Clinton Dowling retained the Mixed Foursomes Championship title on Sunday, although they were closely challenged by son Blake and Joan Wright. Clinton & Fiona held on to win by a mere 2 shots.

Mixed Foursomes Championships

On Sunday members played the Mixed Foursomes Championships on a fine winter's day in warm conditions.

As was expected Clinton and Fiona Dowling retained the title although not without a serious challenge from son Blake and Joan Wright.  Clinton and Fiona, after a flying start faltered a little, but held on to win with 122 gross, two shots clear.

Peter Steel and Joy Cartner recorded 104 & 1/4 to win the best nett with Bill Kingston & Monica Madsen runners up on 107.  Roger and Cynthia Draper took out both approach shots, one in the hole and the other .23m away.

Paul & Tracey Bartlett from Childers Home Hardware once again sponsored the event and we sincerely thank and applaud them for their continued support.  As usual members provided a delicious selection of snacks for after the game.

Women

Last Thursday women played a single stroke competition with Margaret Dennett again winning the day, recording a 72 nett.  Rose Cochrane was runner up, with Joy Cartner and Vicki Wyeth collecting run downs.  Margaret also won the Approach, with her second shot in the hole for a birdie.  Rose won the least putts.  This Thursday we play a single stableford competition.

Men

The Saturday Fourball Best Ball choose stableford proved very competitive with close scores the order of the day for male and/or female teams, or a combination.

Roger Draper and Ivan Philpott recorded 47 points to win by one point from Nigel Radin and Larry Pershouse.  One point further back were Vicki and Mark McAulay leading the rundowns Des Wicks and Mick Hickey on 44 and Geoff Jarrett and Glen Rohdman on 42, on a spin from 3 other pairs.

Kev Savage won the A Division pinshot on 1 & 10, with Larry Pershouse winning the B Division approach.  On 4 & 13, Ray Walker won the A Division pinshot and Geoff Jarrett the B Division.  Helen Ricciardi won the ladies' approach.

Players seemed to enjoy this different competition from the usual stroke and stableford competitions.  This Saturday we have the long-anticipated Captain versus President's Teams Matchplay, with a draw to determine team members.

Vets

Players paired off for the fourball stableford, with some unlikely combinations and surprising results.  Larry Pershouse combined with Vicki Wyeth to record 48 stableford points to put Kieth Rule and Joy Cartner into 2nd place on 46 points, on a countback from Mick Ryan and Marg Dennett, with Nigel Radin and Col Dennett 4th on 45 points.  Some fine scores indeed!

Larry also won the men's approach, while Marg claimed the approach for women with an easy par.

Adrian Martin led the Chook Run winners on 30 nett from Kieth Rule on 31, Mark McAulay, Marg Dennett and Scott White all on 32, Monica Madsen and Vicki Wyeth on 33.

Another very fine golfing day, with next Tuesday the Monthly VIP Stroke sponsored by Col and Marg Dennett, in conjunction with Round 4 of the competition for the Jan Mungomery Salver.

This Thursday we host the Wide Bay Vets Fourball Championships.  Results will be posted next week.

Juniors

The August round of Chip and Putt was played this weekend with some very close outcomes and some good scored being carded.  In the six hole division Xavier Freeman continued his good run of form with a nice score of 76 from Cooper Rehbein on 88.

In the nine hole division Cooper Burns continues to play well and had a score of 69, just enough to beat Katelyn Carige who had a 70.

In the thirteen hole event Curtis Fredriksen and Zane Fitzgerald continued on their recent close run of results with Zane winning on Saturday by just 1 shot on 59.

Next Saturday will be the August Monthly Medal, with the Wide Bay Junior Open and Closed event to be held at Bundaberg Golf Course on the Sunday.  We have 11 juniors competing in this event.  Last week Travis Mittelheuser travelled to Hervey Bay to play in their big Pro-Am and from all reports he played well and enjoyed himself immensely.

Next Saturday play starts at 7:00am for the 13 holers and 7:30am for the six and nine holers.

See you there!
