Club Championships
Women
In the Women's A Grade Club Championships, which started on Saturday, Helen Ricciardi recorded a 79 gross, her best score ever, to lead the A Grade comfortably after day one, but day two was not so kind and Cynthia Draper and Fiona Dowling made up considerable leeway in the contest with both hoping for bigger things next weekend.
In B Grade, Cecily Fay recorded a gross 85, which put her 5 shots under her handicap and leading the way after the first round, but sadly Sunday proved unkind and her two day score of 191 means she is only holding a one shot lead over Rae McCliskie and Joan Wright close behind. A real tussle for the winner here.
Men
With the first 2 rounds completed, the A Grade Men's Club Champion seems certain to be a Dowling. Either Blake, who is leading with gross scores of 69 and 66 from big brother Damien, with current champion and the boys' father Clinton still hopeful, but with a lot of ground to make up. Blake's 66 gross score is believed to be a course record, being achieved after recent changes to the course rating from 67 to 69.
In the absence of last year's champion, Allan Royan,Michael Stanton played well below his handicap to lead B Grade with 81 gross on the first day, and played steady golf on Saturday to hold his lead with Peter Steel his nearest rival five shots back. Bob Champney's 89 gave him a one stroke lead in C Grade after the first day, but he faltered on Sunday to give Mark McAulay a one stroke lead with Roger Draper a couple of shots further back, each with a chance of victory.
A reminder play on Sunday (not Saturday) begins at 12 noon to leave enough after game time for a snack, fellowship and trophy presentations. Please bring a plate.
Women
The women played two single stroke competitions on Saturday and Sunday with major trophies donated by players. Helen Ricciardi easily won the trophy donated by Margaret Dennett on the first day with 63 nett from Cecily Fay on 66, both fine scores. Joan Wright was next on 71. Cecily also won the approach.
On Sunday Cynthia Draper came good with 67 nett to win Joan Wright's donated trophy ahead of Fiona Dowling on 70, with Helen Ricciardi next on 71. Joy Cartner won the approach.
Men
In the single stroke 18 hole competitions held in conjunction with the Championships Michael Stanton's 64 nett on Saturday won him the A Division competition from Blake Dowling on 68, with Peter Hrelja close behind on 69. In B Division Bob Champney won with 67 nett from Len Stallard on 72, with Mark McAulay next on 74. Blake won both pinshots with Ken Albion winning the approach.
On Sunday, Blake's 66 gross won him the A Division trophy from Kev Savage on 68, with Damien Dowling next on 68 nett on a countback from Michael Stanton. Roger Draper derived some comfort with his win in B Division on nett 69, after a disastrous final hole a day earlier. Mark McAulay was second on 70 nett from Len Stallard on 72. Pinshots went to Clinton Dowling and Larry Pershouse, with Bob Champney claiming both an approach and a pinshot.
These single stroke competitions continue next weekend but please note that Sunday (not Saturday) play begins at noon to ensure time after play for a snack and presentation of trophies to winners. Please bring a plate.
Vets
The Vets enjoyed another fine autumn afternoon with close competition for the winners. Mark McAulay continued his fine weekend form to record 42 points in the single stableford competition and be the overall winner.
Paul McCarragher scored 39 points to win A Division from Col Dennett on 37 points, with second runner up visitor Bruce Hadley on 36. Niel Rieck won best nine holes with 18 points on a spin.
Joan Wright was the B Division winner with 34 points on a countback from Vicki McAulay, with Bob Werne second runner up on 33 points. Best nine holes went to Rae McCliskie with 18 points on a spin.
Bob Werne won the men's approach while Joan Wright won the women's.
Chook Run scores were very impressive, led by Mark McAulay, Paul McCarragher and Col Dennett with 30 nett, from Vicki McAulay on 31, Bob Champney on 33 and Margaret Dennett on 34.
Next Tuesday we again return for a single stableford. Hit off at 12 noon.
Juniors
This week Saturday was a stroke round for all grades. Some good scores were recorded. The first being Xavier Freeman in the 6 hole event having 38 off the stick. He won his event comfortably to play 5 shots under his handicap.
In the 9 hole event Damon Carige made the winners circle with a very good 61 off the stick which was 8 shots under his handicap. Christian Fredriksen had a solid round of 86 to win the 9 hole event.
This week is the May Montly Medal with 13 holers starting at 7:00am and 6 & 9 holers starting at 7:30am.
